【Employee interviews】From Ethiopia to Japan: A Young Engineer’s Journey in Future Technologies
Mulugeta Abate, an AI engineer originally from Ethiopia, moved to Japan in 2022 to pursue his passion for robotics and advanced technology. While studying robotics and computer science, Abate discovered a unique blend of tradition and modernity in Japanese culture, which further fueled his ambition to contribute to global society through innovation.
In this interview, Abate shares his experiences in Japan, his journey to joining SORA Technology, and his aspirations to make a lasting impact in developing countries.
Q: Why did you decide to come to Japan?
Abate: I’ve always admired Japanese culture and its technological advancements. When I was studying computer science in Ethiopia, I came across many examples of how Japanese companies integrate cutting-edge innovation into everyday life. This inspired me to explore opportunities to study and work in Japan. In 2022, I moved here to expand my knowledge and skills in robotics and artificial intelligence.
Q: How did you become involved with SORA Technology?
Abate: I first learned about SORA Technology during my research on companies that use AI and drones for social impact. Their work in malaria prevention in Ghana particularly caught my attention. It’s inspiring to see technology being used to tackle pressing global health issues. After reaching out and going through the application process, I was thrilled to join the team. It’s been an incredible experience working on projects that have a direct and meaningful impact on people’s lives.
Q: What challenges have you faced while living and working in Japan?
Abate: Adapting to a new culture was initially challenging. The language barrier, for instance, made day-to-day interactions and communication at work more difficult at first. However, my colleagues at SORA Technology were incredibly supportive, which helped me integrate quickly. Additionally, Japan’s emphasis on precision and quality has been both a challenge and a learning opportunity for me.
Q: What motivates you in your work at SORA Technology?
Abate: The opportunity to contribute to a project that saves lives is deeply motivating. For example, our drone-based malaria prevention program uses AI to identify mosquito breeding sites and deploy targeted measures. Knowing that my work helps reduce the spread of malaria in vulnerable regions gives me a sense of purpose. I’m also inspired by the collaborative environment at SORA Technology, where innovation is encouraged, and everyone’s ideas are valued.
Q: What are your future aspirations?
Abate: I want to continue using technology to solve real-world problems, particularly in developing countries. My dream is to bring advanced technologies like AI and robotics to areas that need them the most, whether it’s improving healthcare, education, or infrastructure. I also hope to inspire young people in Ethiopia and other countries to pursue careers in technology.
