Unitaid Support Enables WHO’s Malaria Elimination Initiative

On November 16, 2025, SORA Technology Co., Ltd.  (Headquarters: Nagoya, Japan; Founder and CEO: Yosuke Kaneko) began implementing a malaria elimination project in collaboration with Unitaid, the World Health Organization (WHO), and Mozambique’s National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP).
The project utilizes SORA Technology’s proprietary AI drone technologies to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
All core technological components provided by SORA Technology, including AI-powered analytics, drone operations, GIS integration, and mobile navigation applications, have been adopted in this initiative.
This marks the first time WHO has introduced the technology developed by SORA Technology as a client, representing a significant milestone where a Japanese startup’s innovation is formally applied in a global public health setting.

Preventing Malaria through AI and Drone Innovation

Malaria remains one of Mozambique’s most pressing public health challenges, causing approximately 22,000 deaths and over 10 million infections annually, according to WHO.
During the rainy season, stagnant water pools become breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit the disease.
SORA Technology’s AI drone system analyzes aerial imagery to detect and map stagnant water, enabling large-scale identification of breeding sites that were previously difficult to locate.
Ground teams are then guided by a mobile navigation app to apply environmentally safe larvicides, resulting in dramatic improvements in efficiency, safety, and precision in malaria prevention operations.

Progress on the Ground and International Recognition

The first larviciding campaign is scheduled between 16 September and 20 November 2025, following the completion of mapping and GIS-based groundwork in key areas, including Mussumbuluco, Malhampsene, Matola C, and Matola D.
Local entomologists, drone operators, spray technicians, and community mobilizers are working together to ensure safe, sustainable, and community-driven operations.
Both Unitaid and WHO have recognized the transformative potential of the technology developed by SORA Technology and highlighted the project as an important example of innovation in public health.

Comment from Dr Philippe Duneton, Executive Director of Unitaid:

“We are entering a period where traditional tools alone will no longer be enough to control diseases like malaria. This pilot represents the kind of forward-looking innovation the global health community needs; testing practical, scalable solutions that can help countries respond to new realities shaped by shifting disease patterns, urbanization, and climate change.”

SORA Technology’s Mission and Future Outlook

SORA Technology applies AI and drone solutions to tackle societal challenges in public health, agriculture, and environmental management.
This project marks the first case in which SORA’s technology has been implemented through a global health financing mechanism, demonstrating its value as a practical and scalable solution for strengthening public health infrastructure in Africa.

Comment from Founder and CEO Yosuke Kaneko:

“We are deeply honored that our technology is being applied in the field through WHO with the support of Unitaid. At SORA Technology, we believe in harnessing innovation for the public good, and we have worked to contribute to global infectious disease control from Japan. This initiative highlights the power of collaboration between international organizations, governments, and the private sector to build fairer and more sustainable health systems.”

Building on the success in Mozambique, SORA Technology aims to expand its initiatives to other African and Asian countries, continuing to collaborate with Unitaid, WHO, and other international partners to create resilient and inclusive communities through technology.
