SORA Technology’s Dengue Mosquito Control in the Philippines Featured on NHK WORLD-JAPAN

SORA Technology Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya, Japan; Founder & CEO: Yosuke Kaneko), a frontier technology company leveraging AI and aerospace innovations to address global health and climate challenges, was recently featured on NHK WORLD-JAPAN’s special program “Climate Change in Asia.” The program highlighted SORA Technology’s pilot project in Leyte, the Philippines, where the company conducted field trials aimed at suppressing the breeding of dengue fever–carrying mosquitoes using drones and artificial intelligence (AI).

About Dengue Fever (from the program website and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan)

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection, primarily transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. It is prevalent across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Symptoms include high fever, headaches, muscle and joint pain, and rash. While most patients recover naturally, severe cases can develop into “severe dengue,” which may involve plasma leakage, organ impairment, and can be life-threatening.

There is currently no specific treatment, with care limited to symptom management. Preventive measures—such as avoiding mosquito bites and eliminating stagnant water sources—are critical. Community-based mosquito control and personal protection remain essential in preventing outbreaks. With early detection and proper medical care, the fatality rate can be kept below 1%. Globally, an estimated 100 to 400 million people are infected annually, and urban outbreaks are increasing due to climate change and population growth.

Project in the Philippines

In July 2025, SORA Technology, in collaboration with the humanitarian organization Help.NGO, conducted a proof-of-concept trial on Leyte Island in the Philippines. The project utilized drones and AI to map, monitor, and reduce mosquito breeding sites as part of efforts to curb dengue fever transmission. The field operations were covered by NHK WORLD-JAPAN’s on-site reporting team.
